Creole on a Plate at Creole Culinary Classroom
Part of St. Maarten Flavors, the Creole Culinary Classroom offers a hands-on introduction to a cuisine with a character all its own, shaped by the many cultures that have met on the island. This is more than a regular cooking class: it is an experience full of flavor, stories and rum.

For every ingredient, you receive an explanation of what it is, where it comes from and what role it plays in Caribbean cuisine. The cooking methods are explained as well, such as the reason for marinating first or preparing a dish over low heat. This way, you learn not only to follow a recipe, but also to understand why it works. There is also plenty of attention for the background of the dishes, each of which has a connection to Sint Maarten or the wider Caribbean region.
During the class, you prepare a complete menu consisting multiple courses and a delicious dessert. The menu varies from class to class. Those returning for a second visit can mention this in advance, so that different dishes are on the program.
Meanwhile, cocktails are made with several types of rum, a spirit that also holds an important place on the island. A rum punch is served, along with a frozen mango cocktail with rum, both a fine complement to the dishes.

The art of plating is part of the experience too. You learn how garnishes, colors and shapes contribute to a professional presentation. The result looks as though it was plated by a chef.
At the end of the class, of course, everything is tasted.
We are not gonna tell which dishes were exactly on the menu. It is best discovered for yourself. The photos show how beautifully everything was presented, and the taste was every bit as good.
Anna is currently on maternity leave. During this period, the classes are led by a new colleague, who teaches with great enthusiasm and expertise. The atmosphere is warm, the explanations are clear and the quality remains consistently high.
You do not need to be an experienced cook to enjoy this class. You go home with new knowledge, a satisfied feeling and a number of recipes to try at home. Highly recommended for both visitors and residents of Sint Maarten. And if the class leaves you hungry for more, be sure to try the other St. Maarten Flavors restaurants and discover even more of the island’s cuisine.
