Updated: Aug 24
Exploring the French Side
Saint Martin is known for bringing an extraordinary variety of cultures and culinary traditions together on one island, divided between the Dutch and French sides. In his latest food journey, David Hoffman of DavidsBeenHere sets out to discover more of these flavors, exploring the French side of the island with visits to Orient Bay, Grand Case and Marigot. A second video takes viewers on a culinary journey through the Dutch side, showcasing food hotspots in Simpson Bay and Philipsburg.
Throughout his videos, David introduces his followers to the local dishes, chefs,
traditions and cultural influences that make Saint Martin such a unique culinary
destination.
In his first video, David explores the French side and dives deeper into the uniquely
multicultural and binational character of the island and its cuisine. He meets chefs with
roots in Paris and Cannes while visiting restaurants in Orient Bay and Grand Case,
experiencing the French culinary influence that has helped shape the island's reputation
as a Caribbean foodie destination.
His journey also introduces him to Creole and Haitian cuisine at the traditional lolos in
Grand Case and Marigot. From one stop to the next, David showcases how naturally
the many different cultures found on Saint Martin come together on the plate.
The Culinary Influences of Saint Martin
The cuisine of St. Maarten and St. Martin reflects the island's rich history and
multicultural character. French, Dutch, Caribbean, African, European and international
influences have all found their place here, creating a food culture that is as diverse as
the island and its people.
Whether you're enjoying traditional Caribbean cooking, French cuisine, locally produced
vegan dishes, fresh seafood or an elegant meal overlooking the ocean, exploring the
island through food is one of the best ways to experience Saint Martin.
Exploring the Dutch Side
In his second video, David continues his culinary adventure on the Dutch side of St.
Maarten, visiting Simpson Bay and Philipsburg and discovering even more of the
island's diverse food scene.
He stops by St. Maarten Flavors member Zee Best, including its popular bakeshop,
where he gets hands-on and learns how to make their famous almond croissants.
Another St. Maarten Flavors member on his journey is Ital Shack, where David meets
owner Ras Bushman and discovers delicious vegan cuisine prepared with locally
produced ingredients. It's another side of St. Maarten's food culture and a great
example of just how varied the island's culinary offerings can be.
Finally, David introduces his followers to the restaurants at Oyster Bay Beach Resort,
where he stays during his visit. His culinary discoveries include seared ahi tuna at The
Veranda and the atmosphere of Infinity Restaurant, located beside the infinity pool with
beautiful views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
